There was a supporting wall in the main area of the house that I wanted to take out. We had to put a beam in the ceiling to support the load of the house before we could take out that wall. That was one of the only things left to demo. As the crew prepped to install that beam, they decided the whole living room ceiling needed to come out. Along with that, all the old insulation came down. Wow, what a mess!
You can see the cinderblock walls now that the brick is down. Yep, cinderblock. All the exterior walls. So, when the tornado sirens sound, head on over to Rosalyn’s house! It’s a bunker. At least the front half of the house because, no, we are not building the addition with cinderblock.
All the back windows were removed and the flooring for the addition was laid. The inspector passed the plumbing rough (first of three rounds of plumbing), and the floor joists.
All of this actually happened about 2 months ago. I need to bring you up to date, and a lot happened quickly in the last two months. We took out the cinderblock along the back wall, framed in the walls on the addition, enclosed exterior walls and installed windows, installed a support beam in the attic across the back of the house, installed a brand new AC unit and ductwork, and completely reframed and replaced the roof. All the studs are up for the interior walls, flooring plywood is down, and plumbing round #2 and electrical (we are having to rewire the whole house—boo) has been completed, inspected, and approved. Whew!
Next steps: bricking the addition, finalizing exterior paint color, bead board on the front porch ceiling, drywall on interior, laying hardwood floors…and there’s more after that, but that’s enough for now. We’re soon getting to my favorite stuff—the pretty stuff! Stay tuned!
